Obesity is most commonly measured by using Body Mass Index (BMI). BMI is determined by a person's weight and height.
A person is considered obese when their BMI exceeds 30 and considered morbidly obese when their BMI is equal to or greater than 40. Weight loss surgery can benefit even morbidly obese patients and is one of the most effective ways to lose weight.
Weight loss surgeons and physicians use your BMI as a criterion in determining if you qualify for weight loss surgery. You may qualify for weight loss surgery if your BMI is greater than 35 and you have at least one other obesity associated illness (co-morbidity), or your BMI is higher than 40 and you are morbidly obese.
The BMI calculator below can help you estimnate your BMI. For an assessment of your BMI and health risk factors, call 706-880-7320 to schedule an appointment.
